There are various reasons to partially or fully clip your horse or pony. Naturally, a horse grows a thicker coat to keep warm during the winter period. It may be more comfortable for you and your horse if you clip it. During intensive training, your horse will start sweating. With a shorter coat, sweat dries faster, and the horse cools down more quickly. Horses with Cushing’s disease (PPID) grow an extremely thick winter coat, and for these horses, clipping may also be more comfortable.

You can clip your horse entirely, or you can choose from several clipping styles. A mostly or fully clipped horse will need to be supported with blankets that are warm enough since they can’t regulate their body heat as efficiently. A horse with only a strip clipped on its chest and under its belly can usually manage without a blanket. Of course, it remains important to monitor your horse and adjust the blankets according to the outside temperature and by carefully observing your horse’s well-being.

The benefits of clipping your cows include improving hygiene and allowing them to release heat more efficiently, which helps with their production.

Calves are usually clipped to encourage better growth, as fungi, mange, and lice are less likely to develop on a clipped skin. If you have sweating calves, the risk of colds and respiratory issues increases. In such cases, it is best to clip the calves along their backs.Cows and calves are also groomed for competitions. This involves washing, clipping, and brushing them to ensure they look their best for evaluation by a professional jury.
